Melbourne Numismatic Society Meeting February 14th 2019
February 14 @ 20:00 - 22:00
Our February meeting (the first for the year – note NO JANUARY MEETING!) will be held on Thursday 14th of February 2019 from 8-10pm at the usual venue – Box Hill Arts Centre, Cnr. Station St and Combarton Ave Box Hill. The syllabus for this meeting will be a speaker talking on “A Numismatic Tour”. Many of us take holidays in places associated with numismatics. A collecting theme is to collect an item from places you have visited. This could be Australian tokens with issuers in the various cities and country towns you visit. Of course the range of time periods is greater in various parts of the world with extended numismatic history. For example Turkey has coins from Ephesus from the 5th century BC and the beaches at Gallipoli have service medals awarded to soldiers who fought in that campaign in 1915.
Illustrated is a scarce 30 Tari of Emmanuel Pinto (ex a recent Downies sale) from 1768 in the long period where the Knights of St. John ruled the island. Malta is a tiny island with a long history. A visit to the capital Valletta and also beautiful St John’s Bay is a must. In the main cathedral in Valletta there are a number of portraits of Emmanuel Pinto. The obverse of the coin shows John the Baptist.
Come along to enjoy the talk and also bring any items associated with your travels or new acquisitions to show. Coffee/tea and a really good biscuit are available after the formalities.
